THE DEMAND FOR SALAD

Demand for salad produce in the UK is growing, with more people than ever before eating salads and vegetables.

Len Wright Salads taps into positive ideas about sustainability and healthy eating.

Len Wright began growing salads in the mid-1960s, and his business now covers an impressive 2,500 acres of salad crops.

His produce incorporates a wide variety of salad leaves, including lettuce and baby leaves, along with speciality tomatoes and peppers – he is a winner of the Tastiest Tomato in Britain award.

Len’s achievements as a salad grower have meant an increasing demand for his produce from suppliers, which his current facilities have been struggling to meet.

One obvious solution was to increase his capacity for indoor, temperature-controlled salad production.

The challenge for Cold Build was to custom-build a new salad production facility for Len Wright Salads,

The outcome would enable Len Wright Salad to supply more salads, enabling the business to increase turnover.

THE COLD BUILD APPROACH

Cold Build (UK) Ltd specialises in designing, building and installing specialist temperature-controlled environments.

Thermal efficiency is essential in the design and build of temperature-controlled food facilities.

Our process begins with looking at the site-specific requirements of a project, then choosing the highest performing thermal insulation panels to meet its requirements.

We minimise thermal transmission wherever there are joins and junctions, and we ensure minimum air leakage.

For a temperature-controlled food facility, the roof design is also crucial. We optimise this to maximise the thermal efficiency of the envelope.

For Len Wright’s salad production facilities, it has also been about maximising available space while ensuring precise temperature control in a sensitive environment.

A GROWING LEGACY

British growing is a vital part of the country’s whole food manufacturing sector. It is a large-scale employer, while British horticulture contributes over £3bn to the UK’s GDP.

As the population increases, food security becomes increasingly important.

Len Wright Salads play a crucial part in the development of British growing.

Cold Build (UK) Ltd is both proud and privileged to have been able to support the expansion of this business.
